Mark Morris is a master choreographer of endless invention still brilliantly sculpting his legacy. Hailed as the “Mozart of modern dance”, he is committed to live music as an integral part of the dance experience. This celebration of joyous creativity is highlighted by "Double" from Morris’ masterpiece, Mozart Dances, set against rich visuals by British painter Howard Hodgkin and Morris, renowned as an intensely musical choreographer, conducting the Brown University Chorus to a glorious Bach motet.

Putnam - Professor of Public policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University - states that "a community's well-being is dependent on the quality of relationships among the citizens of that community." Debra Cash moderates a conversation with Mark Morris Dance Group Founder & Artistic Director Mark Morris, on his body of work and thoughts on building community through the arts. Debra Cash has covered performing arts, design, and cultural policy for print, radio, television and the web. Senior critic for artsfuse.org, she is scholar-in-residence at the Bates Dance Festival and former Scholar at Jacob's Pillow. Cash presents pre-concert talks, writes program notes and moderates panels and events sponsored by regional arts presenters including World Music/CRASHarts and the Celebrity Series. Debra has taught dance history and world dance at the Boston Conservatory, Emerson College and Northeastern University, and is a longtime program consultant to the National Endowment for the Arts and New England Foundation for the Arts. She first wrote about Mark Morris' Mythologies in 1986 as dance critic for the Boston Globe, where she was a regular contributor for 17 years. |
Mark Morris Dance Group Community Master Class
Friday March 7 – 6:00pm-8:00pm Ashamu Dance Studio, 83 Waterman Street, Providence Fee: $10 (Free for Brown Students) - Pre-registration required Company members will lead this master class that will also serve as an audition for the MMDG summer dance intensive. The MMDG Intensives are open to both professional and pre-professional dancers aged 16 and older. Dancers should be at a pre-professional level in both Modern Dance and Ballet. Monday March 3 - Sunday March 9 David Leventhal, former Mark Morris Dance Group dancer, Dance for PD® Program Director, and Brown University alumnus will stage Mark Morris repertory on Brown's Dance Extension.
